Russian special services are measured to take new technologies of lie detectors on armsThe Russian special services have been intending to take the newest technologies on arms, allowing to distinguish the truth from lie. The projects of scientists include creation of absolutely new lie detector capable literally to read the thoughts of the person. Meanwhile lawyers insist on development of the special law regulating similar actions, Russian governmental daily Rossiskaya gazeta reports. "Now our researchers are looking narrowly at the MRI method (MRT, magnetic- resonant tomography, in the Russian media). We assume that exactly this technology will replace operating polygraphs in the long term", experts of one of educational institutions of the federal Security Service (FSB) told the paper. Meanwhile the old kind of polygraphs are in use in Russia. According to the FSB, about 45,000 interviews annually with application of a lie detector take place in Russia. 400 poligraph experts have been working in the country’s ‘power structures’. The polygraph, unlike a tomograph, is very compact, it is located in a small suitcase. It consists from a notebook, several electronic blocks in size with a pack of cigarettes, a bunch of multi-coloured wires. Legal bases for application of a polygraph by law enforcement agencies are given by the Law On Operatively-Search Activity. It provides a possibility of "questioning of citizens with use of the means which are not bringing harm to life and health of the person and environment". Lawyers believe that one offer in the law is not enough for such serious institute. Theoretically, the 57th article of Criminal/Remedial Code of the Russian Federation recognizes the given examinations received on polygraph as the proof for court. In practice judges do not hasten to trust instrument readings. It is considered that the Russian FSB prepare the poligraph experts better than its counterparts, Rossiiskaaya Gazeta marks. It also alleges that the Russian techniques of interrogation with the device are more effective than American ones. The experts of the FSB and the Ministry of Interior of Russia have developed a bill in which all the specifications necessary for effective work with a lie detector are registered. Creation of uniform system of carrying out of examinations and preparations and certifications of experts is offered. The only problem is that technologies do not stay at peace and the bill can become outdated even before acceptance, the paper notes. http://www.axisglobe.com/article.asp?article=1651

I believe we had a previous thread that referenced the television program "Myth Busters". The challenge was to employ counter measures during a polygraph examination administered by an LEO in CA or AZ, I don't remember. The standard counter measures were used, but the examiner had no problems with the DI and NDI determinations.Conversly, at the University of Florida the MRI was used to attempt to determine who the guilty party was. The MRI wrongly identified one of the subjects as a DI. Only three subjects were involved in these examinations, yet we see that much research is still to be done with the very expensive MRI. I think there is already a franchise for them in the U.S. Another interesting study was conducted by Dr. Pankaj Pasricha of the University of Texas on sixteen subjects. The measure of electrical impulses were recorded in the stomach. In each case, the heartrate went up both lying and telling the truth, but the gastric activity increased only in those that were lying. More research is needed. IP: Logged |
